Sharjeel Imam’s counsel contended before the Delhi High Court that the police has already registered a separate FIR in relation to Imam’s two speeches during the anti-CAA protests including the speech in question and there cannot be multiple criminal proceedings on the same incident against a person.

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the response of the Delhi police on a plea by student activist Sharjeel Imam, who is facing various charges arising from the violence following the anti-CAA protests in the national capital in December 2019, seeking quashing of a supplementary chargesheet that introduced the charges of sedition and hate speech in a criminal case related to his objectionable speech at Jamia Milia Islamia.

Justice Rajnish Bhatnagar issued notice on Imam’s plea and granted time to the prosecution to file a status report in the matter, news agency PTI reported.

Imam’s counsel told the court that the challenge to the supplementary charge sheet was to the extent of addition of the charges of sedition, whose operation in the country has been stayed by the Supreme Court till further orders, and hate speech.
